This event was associated with coastal flooding in Southend according to Zong and Tooley (2003). The sea levels in the Thames Estuary reached 20 ft. 18 inches [6.5 m] in one location – 18 inches [0.46 m] below the danger level (The Times, 1961). In Southend, several jetties were submerged.
